Accomplishments of Kaveri in 1995:

17th December 1994 was a rainy, jittery day, but not for Kaveri members. They were there that evening at Wheaton high School to elect their new President. Smt Shailaja Rau became the new President of Kaveri Kannada Sangha, Maryland, Virginia, Washington DC. The complete list of Executive Committee members is given below.

  • i. A major accomplishment of this committee was to establish a Trust Fund in the name of Kaveri at Kannada Sahithya Parishat in Karnataka, to encourage and recognize one new Kannada writer every year. To raise funds, Kaveri staged the famous play "Jokumara Swamy" in March 1995, and Kaveri was successful in collecting $3000.00 (Rupees 150,000.00), thanks to the enthusiasm and interest shown by Kaveri members. As "Gorucha" Shri Go.ru.Channabasappa put it, Kaveri permanently resides at Kananda Sahithya Parishat.
  • ii. Kaveri annual Ugadhi function was a great success with veteran Karnataka actor, Master Hirannayya and his son, stealing the show.
  • iii. In May 1995, Kaveri hosted Dr. U.R. Anantha Murthy, the famous literary figure visiting the United States from Karnataka.
  • iv. After a lapse of some years, our committee decided to show a Kannada Movie of Nagathihalli Chandrashekar,"Kotreshiya Kanasu". This was very well attended. After the movie, a get together with Nagathihalli at a Community center, where he talked about the production of the movie and answered many questions.
  • v. The summer of 1995 was a memorable one. Famous Sugama Sangeetha singer, Mr. C.S. Ashwath and his troupe came to Washington and the Untied States for the first time, and our committee organized his concert at Wootten High School. The audience were enthralled by the music.
  • vi. Gowri and Ganesha festival followed with the same enthusiasm. Members attended in large numbers to enjoy the festival and eat Kadubu!
  • vii. Cold weather was setting in and Kaveri Committee was working very hard to organize the Deepaavali function. Members were entertained by a Hilarious Play "Hitech Hayavadana" and a Dance of lights.

The year ended as fast as it came. We had the annual General Body Meeting in December. My tenure as President came to an end, but the memories of my team and everyone who worked so hard to make it a memorable year for Kaveri linger on.
